Braziers Park is inviting applications for our ACRE (Academic and Creative Research) Residency Programme – a chance for artists, researchers, writers, and creative practitioners to live and work within our residential community while developing an independent project.
About Braziers Park
Braziers Park is a Grade II* listed house and 57-acre estate near Wallingford, Oxfordshire, home to a secular intentional community and the Braziers Park School of Integrative Social Research (BPSISR), a registered educational charity and cooperative society. Founded in 1950 by psychiatrist and educational reformer Dr Norman Glaister and Dorothy Glaister, Braziers was created as a living experiment in community, consciousness, and cooperative learning. Today, it continues to host residencies, workshops, festivals, retreats, and public programmes exploring ecology, creativity, and community life.
Soil, Soul, Society
Braziers’ education programme is guided by the framework Soil, Soul, Society (inspired by Satish Kumar), which reflects the interconnection between the natural world, inner life, and wider society. We encourage ACRE residents to engage with one or more of these themes during their stay – whether through research, practice, conversations, workshops, or informal sharing.
About the ACRE Residency
ACRE residents join Braziers as lodgers, developing their work while participating in community life. The programme supports independent research and creative practice, while also inviting residents into shared enquiry – through exchange with community members, volunteers, visiting practitioners, and other residents.
Open Call Dates
For this open call, we are welcoming up to 12 ACRE residents between 1 December 2026 and 28 February 2027. Residencies may be proposed for any period within these dates, with the possibility of extension depending on room availability and community capacity. There is no fixed submission deadline; however, we recommend applying early, as the open call will close once we have identified 12 suitable candidates.
Costs and Practicalities
The current residency contribution is £560.15 per month for private accommodation. Meals are optional and charged separately. Most community meals are vegetarian and we are usually able to cater for vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free diets; however, we cannot cater for serious allergies or complex intolerances. During your stay, you will be expected to contribute 8 hours of community volunteering per week (e.g. cooking, cleaning, gardening, practical tasks, or support roles). Residents are also invited to take part in our weekly community meetings, including the Sensory Meeting and Executive Meeting, and to abide by our Code of Conduct.
Facilities and Resources
Residents have access to a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces across the estate, including a community library, quiet working spaces, communal rooms, gardens, meadows, woodland, and shared gathering spaces such as the barn and outdoor structures (availability dependent on other activities). Residents wishing to organise sessions or gatherings are encouraged to discuss this in advance with the Education Team.
Application Process
Applicants are invited to submit a short project description, a brief biography, links to previous work/portfolio materials, and preferred dates/length of stay. Applications are reviewed by the Education Team and community members, and shortlisted applicants will be invited to an informal interview.
